Let us introduce you to Aaron in the second post of our meet-the-team series, one of our two brilliant directors who is involved in every area of the business.
Tell us a little about yourself and your role.
I am one of the two directors of Norwich Glass. I am a hands-on director – not only do I make decisions on the progression of the business, but I also support the engineers on site when needed, as well as deal with customer queries and cut glass for them. On a day-to-day basis, I coordinate the engineers’ diaries and deal with any issues that may arise for the engineers or the office staff.
What do you like doing outside of work?
Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with my three lovely daughters and two little grandchildren. I also enjoy doing home improvements, occasional gym sessions, socialising and travelling to different countries to see more of the world outside of Norfolk.
How long have you worked at Norwich Glass? If you’ve worked other roles in the industry, what were they?
I have worked for the company for over 10 years and started as a glazier and locksmith. At the start of 2023, I took over the company along with my business partner Lee.
Before joining Norwich Glass, I started in the industry working for a national company. I was originally office-based before changing career paths and working my way up from a trainee glazier. I also completed a 2-year carpentry course in the evenings.
What made you interested in your current role?
When the opportunity was put forward to purchase the company, I was initially dubious about it, as it was not a role I had done before. However, I was interested in a career change and the challenge of pushing myself past my comfort zone. In doing the role, I am learning every day and hopefully becoming a better manager as well.
What do you enjoy about your job?
Since taking on the role of director at Norwich Glass, I have experienced many ups and downs and challenges that I have never had to deal with before in previous job roles, but I am enjoying these and learning more about the job role as well as myself. It allows me to show my strengths in certain areas and highlights where I need to improve to ensure the company has continuous success.
What is your favourite thing about your job?
Being my own boss is the best part for me, I like being able to manage my own time and make my own decisions, as well as deciding how to lead the company with Lee, my co-director.
Do any challenges come with your job? How do you combat them?
Being a director comes with its challenges, whether it’s managing staff, working with customers, or coordinating with suppliers. But every challenge that has come up, although at the time was difficult to deal with, has benefited my growth in the role.
Do you have any favourite moments from your time at Norwich Glass?
One moment that stands out is when I arranged contractors for a job, including one for a glazing crane and another for a road closure. As this was the first time I had done something like this, it was a relief once the job was completed and everything had gone smoothly, especially as I knew the consequences had something gone wrong. There are of course also social events we have had as a workforce, these have always been a good laugh.
